Socma Forklift Related News:
It’s not cold in Laufoss, Norway in September, and the last of Toyota Material Handling’s nine counterbalanced electric forklifts has just arrived at Toten Transport’s factory. But every winter, Token Transport sees temperatures drop 15 degrees below zero.
Despite this, Novi logistics manager Inge Rosvold and terminal manager Håkon Teslow did not hesitate to replace the diesel forklifts with electric ones. After a competitive bidding process involving at least five suppliers, Toyota Materials Handling Norway (TMHNO) was selected. They have now delivered seven 3.5 ton forklifts and two 2 ton forklifts, all equipped with lithium batteries.
Confidence in phasing out diesel
"Our diesel forklifts are outdated and cost-prohibitive. We have never considered buying a new diesel forklift." Teslow said: "The top management of the company decided that we would make a green transition and choose electric forklifts."
This summer, lithium-ion forklifts will be gradually put into use, and old diesel engines will be phased out. What Teslow is most excited about is how charging works. But this summer, after they worked with Toyota Material Handling Novi to set up a system for scheduling the day, he was reassured it was working.
"In consultation with Toyota, we came up with the idea of charging as often as possible. Charging when you can, not when you have to. We don't quite know how it will play out, but the experience with charging so far has been very positive. " Teslow said.
You need a little space: A well-organized charging room and sufficient available electricity are prerequisites for a successful transition to electric forklifts. During any short breaks, the forklift must be set to charge.
Charging room
In order to achieve regular charging, it is necessary to establish a clean and easy-to-access charging room.
"That's why we recommend setting up charging areas close to break areas and places where employees do other temporary work, and close to areas where forklifts are intensively used." Schell Einar, product manager at Toyota Material Handling Novi Kjell Einar Totsås said Totton Transport Company has performed well in this regard.
Tongtian Transportation had to sacrifice a small storage area for low-frequency goods to build charging stations. The plant already has enough power to withstand intensive charging periods.
Totton Transport Company's terminal operates on a two-shift basis, operating from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Forklifts are hard to drive, carrying heavy loads inside and outside the forklift, as well as on interior and exterior racks. About 400 forklifts load and unload at the terminal each week. Not many people have performed such intensive operations on electric forklifts before, at least not when the Lawfors forklifts are exposed to low temperatures for much of the year.
Tossos said calculations and previous experience indicate it should go smoothly.
Leading sustainable development
GREEN FOCUS: CEO Finn Martinsen is eager for a green shift, and buying a new diesel forklift was never part of the equation.
Totten Transport CEO Finn Martinsen admits the chances of choosing a lithium-electric forklift over a diesel truck are slim. Still, he had no doubts.
"It will soon be minus 30 degrees here. But now the decision to go electric is very simple. In the area of environment and sustainability, we want to lead the way." Martinson said anything else matters to us as a group. said it was all very unnatural, adding that Totten Transport was also betting on biogas forklifts, although Martinson believed the authority's predictability was low. But that’s a debate for another time.
Listen to employees
When changing forklift brands and energy carriers, it is important to involve Totten Transportation employees. At Lawforth Quay, the company has loyal, honest and straightforward staff. It's not unreasonable that some people want things to stay the way they are. This way, when some childhood illnesses and some minor manufacturing defects appeared on the forklifts, management and Toyota received a clear message. Naturally, Toyota Forklift took care of them, and a few months after the first lithium-ion forklift was deployed, the benefits were obvious.
The Toyota Material Handling team, Sales Manager for Eastern Norway Terje Gammelsæter (from left), Area Manager Kjell Erik Baardseth and Product Manager Kjell Einar Totsås are confident that Toyota forklifts can handle fires even when cold weather sets in.
"We have to get employees to rethink," Martinson said. "I think a lot of people are going to have a comfort epiphany when there's no noise and no fumes."
More reasonable use
Electric forklifts also lead to changes in user patterns. In the past, forklifts often sat idle when not in use. Now, when a forklift is not used for a few minutes, it is immediately put on charge. With the purchase, Toten will also now have better visibility into operations through Toyota's fleet management tool, I_Site, which collects every imaginable data on how the forklifts are used, how they are charged, and who is driving them how.
Hyundai: The new forklift has a color screen with all necessary information and mini control levers.
"Currently, we only use I_Site as a checklist for daily inspections, but it is a good program to think about driving wisely." Terminal manager Håkon Teslow said: "The data collected will be huge and we are looking forward to it Use these numbers wisely."
These forklifts also belong to the Toyota Traigo80 series, with the large and small models being 9FBM35T and 8FBMK20T respectively. These forklifts feature upgraded spring seats, full LED light clusters, blue dot warning lights and ergonomic mini joysticks.
Forklifts are delivered to Totten Transport on flexible rental arrangements, minimizing customer risk. TMHNO still owns the forklifts, and if needs change, customers can adjust the number of forklifts or switch to a different size.
