SOCMA supplies mobile furnace tending vehicles for dross skimming and cleaning duties in aluminum melting operations. We select the working arm and head around the furnace opening, the areas to be serviced and the approach available in front of the furnace.
For a custom furnace tending machine enquiry, a furnace section drawing is more useful than a requested boom length alone. It shows the door sill, internal depth and obstructions that determine whether the tool can enter, perform its task and withdraw along the intended path.
Define the Work Required Inside the Furnace
Dross skimming and furnace cleaning place different demands on the working head. Surface skimming calls for a head profile and width suited to the material being collected and the available opening. Cleaning requires a clear description of the deposits, contact areas and movement expected from the tool.
Tell us which tasks occur during the normal production cycle and which belong to a scheduled cleaning period. Include the collection point for removed material and any restrictions set by your furnace or refractory supplier. We use this information to discuss the working device without assuming that one head covers every task.
Our aluminum furnace dross skimming machines provide a product starting point for these discussions. The final working arrangement is agreed against the furnace and process information for the project.
Build the Working Envelope from Furnace Dimensions
The distance from the parked vehicle to the door is only one part of the reach requirement. The tool must also reach its assigned area inside the furnace. Arm elevation, head dimensions and the available withdrawal space all affect that geometry.

Furnace or plant information |
What we use it to establish |
|
Clear door width and height |
Doorway clearance for the selected arm and head. |
|
Sill height and working level |
Head elevation relative to the chassis and furnace floor. |
|
Internal depth and areas to be serviced |
The tool travel needed from the agreed vehicle position. |
|
Distance available in front of the door |
Standing position and space to retract the arm. |
|
Columns, adjacent furnaces and services |
Limits on vehicle approach, upper-structure movement and the tool's swept area. |
|
Skimming or cleaning frequency |
Exposure duration, repeated cycles and tool-change intervals. |
Mark the measurement reference points on the drawing. Maximum boom length, tool-tip reach and insertion depth describe different dimensions; the quotation drawing should make clear which one is being specified.
Select the Vehicle Arrangement for the Furnace Front
Telescopic working arm
The HNBZ8512 furnace tending vehicle uses a three-section telescopic working arm. For this arrangement, we assess the approach to the opening, the required extension and the head movement within the furnace. Retracted dimensions matter as well, particularly where other production traffic passes behind the vehicle.
Rotary working arrangement
A rotary furnace tending vehicle offers an alternative arrangement where the required task involves angular access or a wider working sweep. Rotation also introduces clearance requirements around the upper structure. We review these against the furnace bay rather than selecting the machine from its stated rotation angle alone.
Specify the Head and Its Connection
Head width, profile, connection method and permitted contact surfaces should be agreed with the plant team. A wider skimming head changes the clearance at the doorway. A different cleaning head can change the required movement and the forces acting through the arm.
When an existing tool has performed well, provide its drawing or a dimensioned photograph. We can discuss whether its working profile is relevant to the new proposal. The mounting interface, tool mass and operating conditions still need to be reviewed for the selected vehicle.
Describe Heat Exposure at Each Component
Molten aluminum temperature, tool contact conditions and the ambient temperature around the chassis are separate inputs. Time spent near the open door also matters. Supply the normal exposure pattern, including any prolonged cleaning task that differs from routine skimming.
We use that brief to discuss tool materials, arm protection, shielding and the position of hydraulic or electrical components. A temperature statement for a working head does not establish the allowable environment for the entire vehicle. Thermal requirements should be documented for the components and configuration concerned.
Plan Tool Replacement and Service Access
Include tool-head replacement in the purchase brief. The connection design, wear parts and replacement quantities should be identified before the project order is finalized. Record the part references so replacements can be ordered for the supplied configuration.
Plant access also affects maintenance. Tell us where the vehicle will be parked for inspection and whether there are restrictions on reaching service points. Tool drawings, component identification and the agreed maintenance information should accompany the equipment documentation.
Set Out the Technical Scope Before Ordering
Review our furnace tending vehicle range with your furnace section and task description. We then discuss the proposed vehicle arrangement and the items that need to be resolved in the technical offer.
A dimensioned arrangement showing the vehicle position, arm movement and tool access.
The selected working heads, mounting details and replacement components included.
The agreed thermal conditions and configuration requirements for the duty.
The inspection criteria, documentation and support responsibilities covered by the order.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can one vehicle serve furnaces with different door heights
Provide a separate section for each furnace and identify the vehicle standing position. The proposed arm and head must cover each opening and working area. Differences in access may require a revised head or a different vehicle arrangement.
Can spare skimming heads be included in the initial order
List the required quantities and working profiles in the enquiry. We can include agreed replacement heads and associated parts in the supply scope. The references should match the approved head drawing and mounting arrangement.
How should acceptance requirements be agreed
Define the dimensions, movements, functions and documents to be checked before production is released. Identify the test conditions and any plant-specific verification separately. This gives both parties a clear basis for inspection and handover.
Send Your Furnace Layout for Equipment Selection
To discuss aluminum furnace tending solutions for your plant, send us your furnace layout with the task description, exposure conditions and available working space. Include photographs of the furnace front and existing tools so we can address the equipment requirements in a project quotation.
