How to Operate a Forklift Safely

Forklift safety operating procedures

★1. Check the machine
(1) Before the forklift operation, check the appearance, add fuel, lubricating oil and cooling water.
(2) Check the starting, running and braking performance.
(3) Check whether the lights and audio signals are complete and effective.
(4) During the operation of the forklift, check whether the pressure and temperature are normal.
(5) After the forklift is running, check the external leakage and replace the seals in time.
(6) In addition to the above contents, the battery forklift should also check the circuit of the battery forklift according to the relevant inspection content of the electric forklift.

★2. Start
(1) Before starting, observe the surroundings, and after confirming that there are no obstacles that hinder driving safety, sound the horn first, and then start.
(2) For forklifts with air pressure braking, the reading of the brake air pressure gauge must reach the specified value before starting.
(3) When the forklift starts to load, the driver should first confirm that the load is stable and reliable.
(4) Start slowly and steadily when starting.

★3. Driving
(1) When driving, the bottom of the fork should be kept at a height of 300-400mm from the ground, and the mast must be tilted backward.
(2) Do not raise the fork too high when driving. When entering and leaving the job site or driving, pay attention to whether there are obstacles in the sky. When driving with a load, if the fork is raised too high, it will also increase the overall center of gravity of the forklift, which will affect the stability of the forklift.
(3) After unloading, the fork should be lowered to the normal driving position before driving.
(4) When turning, if there are pedestrians or vehicles nearby, a signal should be issued and high-speed sharp turns are prohibited. Sharp turns at high speeds can cause the vehicle to lose its lateral stability and tip over.
(5) It is strictly forbidden to turn off the engine and slide when the internal combustion forklift is going downhill.
(6) Except for special circumstances, it is forbidden to brake suddenly while driving with loads.
(7) When driving with a load at more than 7 degrees and going up and down at a speed higher than the first gear, the brakes must not be used except in special circumstances.
(8) The forklift must abide by the traffic rules in the factory when it is running, and must keep a certain safe distance from the vehicle in front.

(9) When the forklift is running, the load must be at the lowest position that does not hinder the driving, the mast should be tilted back properly, and the load must not be raised except when stacking or loading. When moving huge objects, the object blocks the driver's sight, and the forklift should be reversed at this time.
(10) The steering of the forklift is controlled by the rear wheels, so you must always pay attention to the swing behind the vehicle to avoid the phenomenon of excessive turning that often occurs when beginners drive.
(11) It is forbidden to turn on the ramp, and it is not allowed to drive across the ramp.
(12) When the forklift truck goes downhill, it should drive backwards to prevent the goods from falling.

★4. Loading and unloading
(1) When fork-loading items, the distance between the two forks should be adjusted as needed so that the load on the two forks is balanced and not deflected. One side of the item should be close to the shelf, and the weight of the fork should comply with the regulations on the load center curve sign.
(2) The loading height must not block the driver's line of sight.
(3) During the loading and unloading process, the forklift must be braked with the brake.
(4) When the forklift approaches or evacuates the goods, the speed should be slow and steady, and the wheels should not crush the goods, wooden pads, etc., so as to avoid the rolled objects flying up and hurting people.
(5) When picking up goods with a fork, the fork should be forked as deep as possible under the load, and attention should also be paid to the tip of the fork not touching other goods or objects. Minimum mast tilt should be used to stabilize the load so that it does not slide backwards. When laying down the load, the mast can be tilted forward a little to facilitate placing the load and pulling out the fork.
(6) It is forbidden to fork goods at high speed and collide with hard objects with forks.
(7) When the forklift is operating, it is forbidden for personnel to stand on the fork.

(8) For forklift operations, it is forbidden for personnel to stand around the fork to avoid the collapse of the cargo and hurt people.
(9) It is forbidden to use the fork to lift personnel to engage in high-altitude operations, so as to avoid accidents of falling from high places.
(10) It is not allowed to use the braking inertia to slide and release objects.
