Our world is paying close attention to reducing emissions, and one of the ways in which many industries are addressing this problem is by opting for zero-emission forklifts. Additional regulations to curb carbon dioxide emissions are being introduced annually for a wide range of industries. Being able to judiciously switch from a diesel, LPG or gasoline powered internal combustion forklift to a zero emission fuel cell forklift can make a big difference in your operation.


Switching to a zero-emission forklift can bring many benefits to your business, but with so many options on the market, choosing between them can be difficult.


In this article, we'll discuss what a zero-emission forklift is, what options are available, and how by pairing a zero-emission forklift with renewable energy sources, you can help your operation move closer to achieving net-zero emissions goals. The world economy needs to reduce carbon emissions by 15% annually by 2040 if the world is to have a real chance of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. According to climate scientists, 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming is the limit needed to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, and if we fail to achieve these goals, there is no shortage of negative and even catastrophic scenarios.

A zero-emission forklift is a forklift that produces no emissions. These are usually electric, although there are other technologies such as hydrogen fuel cells, which we discuss below. There are wide-ranging benefits of using zero-emission forklifts in warehouses. Excellent air quality and low noise levels make employees healthier. Lower operating costs and compliance with government regulations yield real economic benefits.


It is estimated that companies can reduce operating costs by up to 75% by using zero-emission forklifts. These estimates were calculated by comparing these energy-efficient machines to propane-powered forklifts of the same size, as well as propane prices of $2.20 per gallon and electricity prices of $0.12 per kilowatt-hour. A simple formula was used to calculate the battery capacity required for forklift fleets switching from LPG to lithium batteries.


The charging efficiency of forklift batteries has reached such a level that a forklift powered by a lithium battery can maintain multiple shifts with a chance charge of 5-15 minutes, and be fully charged in two hours, greatly improving the efficiency of operation. Zero-emission forklifts are upfront more expensive than internal combustion engine-powered trucks. However, depending on the application, the total cost of ownership can be reduced by 20-40% in 2-4 years considering the higher maintenance labor and fuel costs of ICE forklifts.


It's important to consider exactly which zero-emission forklift truck you want to use in your warehouse. Some are more expensive and more efficient, while others require a complex supply chain to service and drive these forklifts.


For this reason, it is important to understand the basic differences between the various types of zero-emission forklifts before committing to purchasing a zero-emission forklift for warehouse operations.

Any electric powered forklift will produce zero emissions after production, which is good for the environment. Electric forklifts offer exceptional efficiency. A 48V electric forklift with a 700AH battery capacity can save about 7 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere per year compared to a similar diesel powered forklift. This is based on five-day operations per week and an eight-hour shift. This means that three-shift operation will result in at least 21 metric tons of CO2 offset per year with just one truck. And that's not the end.


One advantage of lead-acid forklift batteries over lithium batteries is that they cost less to purchase. However, they use about 30% more electricity than lithium-ion batteries due to their lower charging efficiency. When brand new, lead-acid batteries have a maximum energy conversion efficiency of about 63%, while forklift lithium batteries have a much higher energy conversion efficiency of 90-95%. This difference in efficiency opens the door to using lithium batteries to save a lot of energy over comparable lead-acid batteries, which also reduces your utility bills.


Power generation produces carbon emissions, the amount of which varies from country to country and energy source. For example, coal-fired generators are the worst carbon emitters, while renewable energy from solar or wind generators has zero emissions. Reducing electricity consumption results in less power generation, which in turn reduces carbon dioxide emissions. Any electric forklift will have a significant reduction in emissions compared to fossil fuel powered forklifts.


With lithium batteries, drivers can simply plug in the forklift after a break, and when they get back to work, the forklift can start up again. Maintenance of forklift lithium batteries does not require the watering or charge balancing associated with lead-acid forklift batteries. This further reduces the overall cost of operating your electric zero-emission forklift.


The life of lead-acid batteries is about 1/3 to 1/5 of the life of lithium batteries, and unlike lithium batteries, once they reach the end of their life, they can no longer be used for secondary applications.

Hydrogen fuel cells primarily use hydrogen, which reacts with oxygen to produce electricity and water. It is also considered a zero-emission energy source because it does not release any greenhouse gases in its reaction.


However, as effective as they can be, there are some serious issues to consider when you consider choosing a hydrogen fuel cell over a lithium forklift battery.

commercial viability. Setting up a hydrogen refueling station in a facility costs $8,000 to $10,000, followed by monitoring and hydrogen delivery costs of about $800 per month. The fee makes hydrogen fuel cell technology only available for facilities with 12 or more trucks.


Lack of infrastructure and competition. While many manufacturers are pursuing the development of hydrogen fuel cell systems, there is not enough infrastructure to supply enough cheap hydrogen and support the regular maintenance, servicing and repair of these efficient forklifts.

Fuel cell mechanics and technicians are still relatively scarce, and underdeveloped infrastructure means suppliers can raise prices.
