Engine Lubrication System Maintenance Precautions

512A0142

The primary function of an engine lubrication system is to prevent friction between components that are in relative motion.

Circulation workflow of oil in the lubrication system - the gear-type oil pump draws oil from the oil pan, and after passing through the oil cooler and filter, it flows to the left and right camshaft oil passages and the main oil passage respectively and passes through the main oil passage. The oil is supplied to the turbocharger, crankshaft, piston, cooling nozzle, and other parts respectively. After completing the task, the oil naturally flows back to the oil pan by its own gravity and then starts the next cycle.

Oil grade

Caterpillar recognizes the American Petroleum Institute API's oil licensing and certification system. When there are multiple API levels to choose from, the one with the higher level should be selected.

Cat DEO

Caterpillar oils exceed many performance requirements of other diesel engine manufacturers. Therefore, this oil is an excellent choice for engines.

oil level check

The oil level checked when the engine is stopped is more accurate. When checking, make sure the engine is level.

Replace oil filter

Change the oil filter at every oil change, or when the oil filter differential pressure reaches 103 kPa. NOTE: Do not attempt to clean the oil filter and reuse it.

Drain the oil

The old oil needs to be drained before changing the oil. Be careful not to drain the oil when the engine is cold. Because waste particles settle at the bottom of the oil pan when the oil is cold, these waste particles may not be discharged with the cold oil. After the engine is running, when the oil is still warm, drain the oil in the oil pan, which is beneficial to drain the waste particles suspended in the oil.

Dismantling and checking the old filter element

Cut off the end caps on both sides of the oil filter element. Unfold the pleated paper and inspect the filter element for metal debris. Excessive metal debris in the filter element may indicate early wear or impending failure. Use a magnet to separate ferrous and non-ferrous metals found in oil filter elements.

add oil

Remove the oil filler cap. Fill the crankcase with oil only through the oil filler line.

crankcase breather

The crankcase breather is a simple ventilation device, which is installed above certain valve cover, and then connected to the outside of the generator room through a breathing tube, and communicated with the atmosphere. The crankcase breather and breathing tube should be kept free of blockage and oil accumulation.
