Toyota Material Handling Japan (“TMHJ”), a division of Toyota Industries Corporation, unveiled a new fuel cell forklift on September 13. Thanks to the dramatic reduction in the cost of the fuel cell system, the price of the vehicle has been reduced by 30%, and its durability has doubled compared to existing vehicles.

The new fuel cell forklift is the next generation of ecological forklift, which has good environmental performance and does not emit carbon dioxide during operation. At the same time, it has super convenience and can complete hydrogen refueling in just three minutes. TMHJ has received introduction support from the Ministry of the Environment since launching the first fuel cell forklift in Japan in 2016, and the vehicle was introduced to customers with long working hours and frequent use such as factories, airports and markets.

The new fuel cell forklift is the first major improvement over the crude model in six years, adopting the fuel cell of the Toyota MIRAI released in 2020. It achieves the same output as current vehicles while reducing the number of fuel cells through the power generation system developed by TMHJ. System cost has also been significantly reduced by increasing the number of shared parts with MIRAI and reducing the number of parts for the entire FC system. In addition, by adopting a power generation control system that suppresses deterioration of the fuel cell, the durability of the system has been doubled compared to the current system, enabling customers to use it for a longer period of time.

As the manufacturer with the largest*4 market share of industrial vehicles, TMHJ will continue to contribute to the realization of carbon neutrality and a hydrogen society from the logistics industry through the development and popularization of fuel cell lineups.
